The Toronto Maple Leafs could be without one of their most crucial players on the blueline, as defenseman Chris Tanev could be out for the remainder of the regular season.
For a player with multiple injuries and someone who is demonstrably unreliable when it comes to his body and future health issues, this is just another blow to an organization that may have missed out on a major free transfer. Tanev played just eleven games for the Maple Leafs this season.
According to David Pagnotta van The Fourth PeriodTanev is meeting with a surgeon this week to determine next steps regarding a groin injury. If surgery is required, Tanev is expected to be sidelined until late April or early May, putting his availability for the remainder of the 2025-26 season and possibly the postseason in serious doubt.
Tanev returned to the lineup in late December and played in three games, but this injury is reportedly unrelated to his previous lower-body issue. Considering the wear and tear Tanev has suffered over his long NHL career, this is an unfortunate but perhaps unsurprising development.
The timing couldn’t be worse for Toronto. The Eastern Conference playoff race is tight and the Leafs’ margin for error is small. Losing a veteran shutdown defenseman who consistently delivers quality, solid home performances when healthy is a huge blow. Tanev’s presence, leadership and ability to absorb tough minutes have been invaluable.
At this point, the priority may have to be Tanev’s long-term health. Whether that means holding him out for the season or hoping for a late playoff return, the Leafs will have to adapt quickly — and possibly explore roster or cap-related options — as they navigate a critical stretch without one of their warriors.
