The Toronto Maple Leafs expect clarity this week on whether defenseman Chris Tanev will undergo a structural procedure for whatever ails him, and the hope is that if the surgery is successful, he can return before the end of the regular season.
Tanev, who has been sidelined since Nov. 1, recently rejoined the team in a non-contact jersey and took another step forward on Monday by skating in a regular jersey. While encouraging, medical clearance is still pending as specialists assess how his symptoms have developed over the past six weeks.
According to team insiders, and as discussed by Sportsnet’s Nick Kypreosthe conversation now focuses on whether surgery could alleviate the problem that has kept him out.
“They are going to come to a decision on whether or not he needs surgery for whatever is wrong with him,” Kypreos said, noting that the club is optimistic he can return this year if a procedure is opted for. “If they choose a certain procedure, there’s still a chance he’ll come back… which I think is great news.”
Would a returning Tanev be useful for the Maple Leafs?
Justin Bourne wondered how helpful Tanev would be if he missed so much hockey and returned in time for the playoffs.
The situation inevitably draws parallels to Jake Muzzin, who had to make tough choices during his run with the Leafs and questions about serious injuries. Kypreos wrote: “While we wait to hear what’s officially wrong with Tanev, we now know that Muzzin suffered a cervical spine injury that put him at risk of permanent paralysis if he were to take another major blow.”
For Tanev, the concerns are similar: another major collision could push him to the point of no return. Surgery can help reduce that risk, but there is always a risk of going under the knife if it is not necessary.
The Leafs and Tanev are expected to make a final decision later this week.
