Toronto’s sports circle received one piece of positive news on what was otherwise a very dreary morning following the Toronto Blue Jays’ 2025 World Series loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Toronto Maple Leafs announced Sunday morning that defenseman Chris Tanev had been released from hospital after a terrifying collision with Philadelphia Flyers forward Matvei Michkov.

After this, a stretcher was called to Tanev

The collision occurred Saturday evening in the third period of the Maple Leafs’ 5-2 victory over the Flyers. It initially seemed like a relatively harmless play, but it soon became clear that Tanev needed help getting off the ice. There was also some extra caution involved, considering it was Tanev’s first game back after a similar injury a few weeks ago, when he took a shoulder to the jaw from New Jersey Devils forward Dawson Mercer.

Fortunately, Tanev gave the thumbs up as he was stretchered off the ice, and following the news that he had been released from hospital and cleared to return to Toronto, this seems like a somewhat best-case scenario for all parties given how things originally looked.

Tanev gives him a thumbs up and hopes he’s doing well

This doesn’t reveal anything about a possible return to action for Tanev, especially if it has something to do with the head, but the fact that he’s back home with the team hopefully means he won’t be out for too long. However, expect the team to exercise some caution with Tanev going forward, given his age and the number of minutes he logs with the Maple Leafs when fully healthy.

The Maple Leafs return to action Monday night when they host the Pittsburgh Penguins, looking to snap a winning streak after being denied a three-game losing streak with their loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets on Thursday night. The Maple Leafs will likely provide an update on Tanev’s status prior to Monday’s game, but it seems like an extremely safe bet to assume Tanev won’t play.
