Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Chris Tanev left Saturday’s game against the Philadelphia Flyers on a stretcher during the third period.

Kites forward Matvei Michkov collided with Tanev from behind and appeared to make contact with Tanev’s head. Tanev crashed to the ice, became immobilized and left the game on a stretcher. Tanev then gave a thumbs up to the audience.

Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube confirmed after the game that Tanev is undergoing further testing at a hospital in Philadelphia, and did not yet know if Tanev would return home with the team.

Michkov had no malicious intent, but he received a minor two-minute penalty for interference.

Here’s the piece in question, and we don’t necessarily recommend watching it:

The Tanev injury. He gave him a thumbs up when he was handed off from such a warrior

Tanev gives him a thumbs up and hopes he’s doing well

Tanev played 14:50 and added one assist with a plus-two rating in 24 shifts before leaving Saturday’s game.

It’s a scary development, especially considering Tanev just returned to the lineup after suffering a concussion earlier in his career. Tanev is also arguably the Maple Leafs’ most important defenseman, and it would be a crushing loss for the team if he were to miss any more time. If Tanev misses an extended period of time, it’s likely the Maple Leafs will either recall Dakota Mermis from the AHL’s Toronto Marlies or reinsert Philippe Myers into the lineup. Mermis was sent back to the Marlies on Saturday as Tanev was activated from injured reserve.
“If you’re a little bit bewildered and a little bit confused, that’s not ideal,” Tanev said Sportsnet’s Luke Fox on Friday. “But soon after, it felt very normal, which was nice. I don’t think anyone mimics anyone else. Sometimes your symptoms can last for a while; sometimes they don’t. Sometimes it’s headaches, sometimes it’s just pressure in the head. It can be your mood. I mean, there are so many different things a person can feel, and I don’t think anyone is the same.”
