McMann was assessed a match penalty for the play, and NHL Player Safety stated in their video ruling that the play warranted additional discipline because he had full control of his stick and chose to act dangerously with it instead. His lack of a previous suspension explains why the suspension was only for one game, as there is a case where the NHL would have put down the hammer if it had been done by a player with more history of suspensions.
It’s worth noting that Goncalves, who received a stiff penalty and a game misconduct, never received a hearing from NHL Player Safety for his violation.
“That’s a tough one. It really is,” Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube said after the game. “I need to take a closer look, which I haven’t done. From our position on the bench I couldn’t see it very well. So I’ll take a look, but I had a hard time with that, to be honest.”
McMann will be eligible for a return against the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday. He scored fourteen points (eight goals and six assists) in 29 games played this season.
