Another NHL season, another report suggesting the Toronto Maple Leafs are interested in Calgary Flames forward Nazem Kadri.

This time the report came from TSN insider Darren Dregerwho mentioned the Maple Leafs as one of several teams that have expressed interest in Kadri. They join the Montreal Canadiens, Colorado Avalanche and Los Angeles Kings as clubs monitoring the veteran forward.

Since Toronto traded him in 2019there have been periodic reports linking the Maple Leafs to a possible reunion. That speculation increased once again Brad Treliving was hired as general manager. After all this time, can the Maple Leafs finally bring Kadri back to Toronto?

On one recent episode of Insider TradingDreger discussed Toronto’s interest in Kadri.

“Many of us are looking at Nazem Kadri as one of the contenders who could be on the move. What I can tell you is that there are ongoing discussions between Craig Conroy, the general manager, and Nazem Kadri’s camp.

That doesn’t mean anything is imminent, but Kadri wants to do what’s best for the Flames, and he also wants to win a Stanley Cup.

I would say there is some interest. Tires have been kicked from Toronto, Montreal, Colorado, LA, maybe the Dallas Stars. But there is still a lot of work to do, and there is no rush as far as Calgary is concerned.”

With the Flames clearly selling assets as they delve deeper into a long-awaited rebuild, Kadri stands out as one of their biggest potential trade chips. He joins the likes of Blake Coleman and possibly newly acquired Zach Whitecloud as players who can be moved before the NHL Trade Deadline of March 6, 2026.

Is the Maple Leafs interest legitimate?

Honestly, this feels more like noise than anything truly realistic. The idea of Kadri returning to Toronto is a storyline that never seems to go away and always generates attention. As much as Leafs Nation would love to see it happen, the logistics make it hard to imagine. Kadri, now 35, is signed through the 2028-29 season and carries a $7 million cap hit. That alone makes a deal incredibly difficult for the Maple Leafs, especially when it comes to other parts of the roster that need attention.

The biggest need for Toronto right now is clearly on the blue line. While additional secondary scoring would help, the defense has been hit hard by injuries and that should be the priority. If the Maple Leafs can fill that need with a cheaper move, like adding someone like Luke Schenn or another mid-range defenseman with a manageable cap hit, then it might make more sense to revisit Kadri’s idea.

However, their ideal target in defense remains Dougie Hamilton. He fits right in with what this team is missing, but his cap alone would almost certainly remove Toronto from the Kadri conversation. Furthermore, the Maple Leafs simply don’t have the asset pool to pull off multiple major trades of that size.

As appealing as a reunion would be, it doesn’t feel realistic to bring Kadri back to Toronto. It would likely complicate the Maple Leafs’ ability to address their most pressing needs and improve the roster in meaningful ways. For that reason, it may be wiser for them to look elsewhere as the trade deadline approaches.
