Former Team India batsman Manoj Tiwary has hit out at assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate after his comments about Rohit Sharma after the second ODI against New Zealand. Tiwary stated that such comments were not justified considering Rohit’s status and achievements for India in international cricket.

Ten Doeschate had said Rohit Sharma had not had enough match practice for the home ODI series against New Zealand. Rohit, who started the 2026 calendar year as the world’s No. 1 ODI batsman, scored 26 and 24 in the first two matches. He failed to convert those starts after negotiating the new ball.

“He should have thought about it” – Manoj Tiwary on Ryan ten Doeschate’s comments about Rohit Sharma

At a recent event, Manoj Tiwary said that he knows Ryan ten Doeschate well from their time together at Kolkata Knight Riders and respects him as a person. Tiwary stated that ten Doeschate should have avoided making public comments about a senior player like Rohit Sharma.

“With great respect, I would like to tell Ryan ten Doeschate that he worked at KKR for four years. He is undoubtedly a very good person, but because of the kind of comments he has made, I think he should have thought about it,” Tiwary said.

“He has also played international cricket for Netherlands, but if you look at his international record, I say this with all due respect, it is less than 5% of what Rohit has achieved in his career, not just as a batsman but also as a captain,” he added.

Rohit Sharma has given so much happiness to the nation – Manoj Tiwary

Manoj Tiwary said Ryan ten Doeschate’s comments were demoralizing coming from the dressing room. Pointing out that Rohit Sharma has brought great success to India, including winning the Champions Trophy, Tiwary said such achievements deserve respect.

“He has given so much happiness to the nation by also winning the Champions Trophy and then by talking like that, that even when he is in the team, not like he is sitting at home and commenting, he is part of the management and these kinds of comments about your player are demoralizing. I don’t know why he said that. He should think about this. I think he should not make such comments,” Tiwary added.

Rohit Sharma’s recent ODI form ahead of the series decider

Rohit returned to international cricket in October and made an immediate impact. He scored a fifty and a century in the ODI series in Australia, won the Player of the Series award and carried over that form in the home series against South Africa.

Sharma also registered his 33rd ODI hundred in Sydney in October 2025 and followed it up with two fifties in India’s 2-1 win over South Africa. He later played domestic cricket for Mumbai in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, scoring a century and a duck in Jaipur.

However, the 38-year-old has not converted his starts in the ongoing ODI series against New Zealand. India won the first ODI by four wickets but lost the second by seven wickets, leaving the three-match level at 1-1. The final ODI will be played in Indore on January 18.
