Manish Sureshkumar and Vaishnavi Adkar were authoritative as champions in the Fenesta National Tennis Championship on Saturday.
Manish defeated fellow trainee from coach Sureshkumar Sonachalam from Chennai, qualifying competition Koerthivassan Suresh 6-4, 6-2 for the title of the men.
It was a lively match in which both players exhibited their repertoire from the Achterhof with energetic blows, although they were both tired after the heavy passage to the final.
“I am very happy to win this second national title. Coming in the tournament, I had no expectations because I was not happy with my game. It is not at the same level that it used to be. I did not play so well at first. I listened after beating Nitin Kumar Sinha in the quarterfinals. This title gave me confidence.
Just like another Tamil Nadu boy, Rethin Pranav who had gone to the title of the men after he had made the main drawing last year as a loss of luck, Kerthivassan threatened to hit it big, but fell marginally short, despite a brave effort. He won everyone’s admiration for packing such a lively game in a wire -like frame. He fell RS.200,000 as a second prize.
The prize money was the same for the women’s champions and second place, while Vaishnavi her colleague Maharashtra teammate, Akanksha, defeated 6-1, 6-2 with considerable ease, despite the fact that she dropped her serve twice.
“Until the last minute I was not sure about participating in this tournament because of the knee injury. I am happy to be the national champion. It feels surreal,” said Vaishnavi, even as she congratulated the DCM Shriram Group and thanked for keeping the event for more than 30 years.
In the Junior Boys final, Tavish Pahwa recovered from 0-3 to take the first set in the Tie-Break, before Hruthik Katakam retired in the second set. Harshini Nagaraj played a steady game to beat the strongly built Snigdha Kanta in three sets for the title of the girls.
London Games Medalwinner Yogeshwar Dutt was the most important guest and presented the trophies together with the chairman and director of DCM Shriram, Ajay Shriram, the Davis Cup captain Rohit Rajpal, business head of Fenesta, Saket Jain, Saket Singh and Gupta.
