Former striker Louis Saha has tipped Manchester United to sign Brighton and Hove Albion striker Danny Welbeck.
After Rasmus Hojlund’s poor performances in the Premier League last season, the Red Devils decided to sign Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig last summer to strengthen the frontline.
They opted to send the Dane to Napoli on loan, and the Italian champions are obliged to make the transfer permanent at the end of this season if they qualify for the Champions League.
The Slovenian has taken his time to adapt to the physicality of the Premier League so far and has been out injured in recent weeks. In his absence, Joshua Zirkzee has provided cover as a centre-forward, but has not shown his best.
Now, during a recent interview (via Subway), Saha said Man Utd should sign an experienced striker like Welbeck, which will benefit other forwards like Sesko and Zirkzee as they could learn under his tutelage.
Welbeck is not just an experienced player; he is also ‘very talented’ and is efficient in front of goal. So if United manage to secure his services in January, he would have a huge impact.
Man Utd urged Welbeck to sign
Saha said:
“I would have liked Manchester United to sign Danny at the start of the season. Not only is he very talented, but he is also very efficient and he has a lot of experience. I think Sesko and other strikers would benefit from someone like Welbeck challenging them, teaching them more about the game, more about positioning.”
“Welbeck’s experience would be an example they can all learn from, and I think if Danny arrives in the winter transfer window he can make a huge difference to the results on the pitch.”
The 35-year-old came through Man Utd’s youth academy before leaving permanently in 2014. The striker even played 42 games for England and scored 16 goals.
He has entered the final few months of his current contract at Brighton and they may be open to cashing in on him in January to recoup some transfer fee.
In 17 appearances across all competitions, Welbeck has scored seven goals and registered a single assist so far this season, helping his side to a European place in the Premier League.
It will be interesting to see if Man Utd will ultimately listen to Saha’s advice and make a move to sign Welbeck in January or next summer to strengthen the front line.
