Instead of walking over the field after he had been replaced by Leny Yoro, referee Peter Bankes dedicated him to leave via the nearest border.
This route led Maguire behind the goal that Chelsea defended, where he violated League rules by playing a ball from one of the cones.

Behind each goal line, two spare balls are placed on cones aligned with the edge of the criminal area.
Players are expected to pick up these balls to restart the game, because the Multiball system is intended to reduce interruptions when the ball goes out.
The Premier League sets the system, introduced in the 2022/23 season, “plans to maintain the electricity of competitions and to reduce delays”.
They also emphasize that “compliance with the relevant rules and guidance is of vital importance to maintain consistency and, crucial, to ensure that home clubs do not achieve a competitive advantage due to their abuse of the system.”
Outfield players have to pick up the original ball or get one from the cones, instead of receiving these from Bal Assistants.
Only keepers who prepare for a target kick may receive a ball from assistants who are placed behind the goal.
According to the Multiball guidelines: “Participants (including but not limited to players, replacements, residents of the technical area or any other club staff) should not disrupt the Multiball system, the competition ball or the replacement balls at any time.”
The rules also clarify: “Each not following the multiball protocol is referred to the Premier League for further research and possible regulatory action under the Premier League rules.”
Although serious consequences seem unlikely, Maguire can now be more careful in future situations.
