The midfielder has reportedly suffered a minor injury that has ruled him out of the Premier League match at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as the Red Devils look to extend their four-match unbeaten run.
Mainoo has yet to start a league match for United this season amid speculation he could be loaned out in the January transfer window. By the way, Spurs were one of the clubs linked to him this summer.
Fletcher could make his first-team debut for the club after being called up for a place on the bench. Last season he was part of the match selection several times.
The 18-year-old’s inclusion maintains Man Utd’s 88-year record of having a homegrown graduate in every matchday squad. The series, which spans more than 4,000 consecutive games, began in October 1937.
Meanwhile, Benjamin Sesko has been dropped to the bench, while Amorim Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Amad Diallo started in the front three. Harry Maguire, Noussair Mazraoui and Patrick Dorgu have been recalled.
Thomas Frank has opted for Brennan Johnson, Richarlison and Xavi Simons after the trio started on the bench in last weekend’s tepid defeat against Chelsea. Rodrigo Bentancur has been replaced by Pape Matar Sarr, who will start in midfield alongside Joao Palhinha.
