Manchester United are reportedly planning to make a move to sign Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta Football insider.
The Frenchman’s future was a subject of speculation in the recently concluded winter window as he was reportedly open to leaving Selhurst Park to take on a new challenge in his career.
Nottingham Forest and Juventus have been heavily linked with a move for the 28-year-old, but AC Milan came closest to signing him. Ultimately, the deal fell through after a knee problem was noticed during his medical treatment, prompting the Rossoneri to pull the plug along the way.
The Eagles have signed Jorgen Strand Larsen from Wolverhampton Wanderers to strengthen the number 9 position, with Oliver Glasner now also having Mateta as an option.
Football insider state that the 28-year-old could undergo surgery to cure his persistent knee problem, and if he were to do so, he would be sidelined for an extended period.
Man Utd have an interest in the France international and have already held internal ‘discussions’ to secure his services in the summer window.
Although United’s need to sign a new striker has diminished following the recent promising performances of Benjamin Sesko, they will be keeping a close eye on Mateta’s situation.
Matta to Man Utd
Mateta is valued at around £35 million Transfer market and has a contract until 2027. The South London club could therefore be open to letting him leave at a reduced price at the end of this season.
The Crystal Palace star, who stands 6ft tall, has scored 12 goals in all competitions this season and has shown his qualities in the Premier League in recent years.
He is an experienced player and could be a smart signing for Man Utd if they buy him. However, it will be interesting to see whether the Old Trafford club will ultimately make a concrete move to secure his services this off-season.
Meanwhile, after three straight wins over Manchester City, Arsenal and Fulham, Man Utd will face Tottenham Hotspur in the league on Saturday before taking on West Ham next week.
