Man Utd are now eyeing Ecuadorian star Ederson Castillo

Manchester United have entered the race to sign highly-rated Ecuadorian defensive midfielder Ederson Castillo from LDU Quito, according to reports Ekrem Konur.

Ecuador has quickly become South America’s newest hotbed for rising stars, with several notable youngsters completing their moves to major European clubs in recent months.

Remember new hair

Chelsea have already signed Kendry Paez from Independiente del Valle in 2023 and have also reportedly reached an agreement in principle to sign Deinner Ordonez, regarded as one of South America’s best centre-backs.

Earlier this month, Arsenal announced the signings of Edwin and Holger Quintero after reaching an agreement with del Valle to sign the 16-year-old twins, with more clubs looking to sign talent from the country.

United are not left out and are now looking for the next Ecuadorian gem, such as Ekrem Konur claims the Red Devils have joined the race to sign Castillo as a future midfield option.

Castillo remains primarily part of Liga de Quito’s youth setup. However, he has been training consistently with the senior team and is widely seen as the next breakout after the Quintero twins, who moved to Arsenal.

The Red Devils will now hope to raise their interest by accelerating efforts to sign him Women claims the 17-year-old is also attracting interest from Anderlecht, Atlético Madrid and Bayern Munich.

Expectation

For United, pursuing Castillo fits in perfectly with the club’s revamped recruitment model under their new-look football hierarchy. The Red Devils plan to move away from spending big sums on already established names, instead focusing on identifying teenagers with significant long-term potential.

This new approach has seen United bring in a number of promising youngsters – Harley Emsden-James, Enzo Kana-Biyik and Diego Leon – to complement an academy that was strengthened last season with the arrivals of Ayden Heaven and Chido Obi-Martin.

The club also has a pre-contract agreement with Fortaleza regarding Colombia U17 captain Cristian Orozco, who will join once he turns 18 in July 2026, and they remain eager to sign further highly rated talents.

For Castillo, the chance to join one of Europe’s biggest clubs, to develop and potentially become an important part of their team in the future, would be an opportunity he would consider.

However, United will have to act as quickly as their Premier League counterparts to sign the youngster amid interest from other major European clubs.
