Man Utd and Chelsea fight over deal to sign Leipzig midfielder Assan Ouedraogo

Manchester United and Chelsea are keeping tabs on highly rated RB Leipzig midfielder Assan Ouedraogo over a possible move to the Premier League. Florian Plettenberg.

The midfielder came through the ranks at Schalke’s academy, where his performances for Die Königsblauen attracted the attention of several clubs before Leipzig won the race to sign him in January 2024.

Ouedraogo’s first season at Leipzig was severely disrupted by injuries, restricting the 19-year-old to just three Bundesliga cameos and one German Cup match alongside two separate setbacks.

Now fully fit for the current 2025/26 season, the German star has come alive for Leipzig, producing six goals in his last eight Bundesliga appearances.

He also begins to make his mark on the international stage, scoring on his debut in Germany, becoming the youngest player to do so since Klaus Stürmer in October 1954.

After Sunday’s 2-0 win over Werder Bremen, where Ouedraogo again found the net, Leipzig manager Ole Werner described him as a ‘incredible talent’, which emphasizes exactly why several top clubs are now circling for his signature.

According to PlettenbergPremier League clubs are keen to sign the German international midfielder ahead of next summer’s transfer window.

Of the clubs interested in signing him, the journalist claims that Man Utd and Chelsea are keeping a close eye on the 19-year-old midfielder over a possible move to England next summer.

Conflict

Although Ouedraogo still has four years left on his contract at the Red Bull Arena, there is no release clause in his contract, according to the report. But as with most player sales, Leipzig will likely demand a significant sum to approve his departure.

Chelsea are known for signing some of the best young talents across Europe, and it is no surprise that they have shown an interest in Ouedraogo, who has been one of the standout midfielders in the Bundesliga this season.

With seven months to go until the start of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in America, regular game time is said to be the German midfielder’s priority, which could give United a slight advantage as they face an overhaul with Casemiro, Kobbie Mainoo and Manuel Ugarte all facing uncertain futures at the club.

Having already signed Benjamin Sesko from Leipzig in the summer, United could build on their relationship with the German club to negotiate a deal for the midfielder, which will surely cost much more than his £8 million. Transfer market valuation.
