Former Italy international Giuseppe Rossi has claimed that Sandro Tonali “deserves to play for a big team”, sparking fresh discussions over the Newcastle United midfielder’s long-term future, amid reported interest from Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United

Tonali, who joined Newcastle from AC Milan in 2023 on a £55m contract, has re-established himself as a key figure at St James’ Park after a difficult first season in England. The Italy international has impressed with his composure in midfield, his tactical intelligence and his ability to dictate the pace of games under manager Eddie Howe.

In a recent interview, Rossi suggested that Tonali’s qualities could see him eventually move to one of Europe’s biggest clubs, in partnership with BetVictor Online Casino. He told GOAL: “He deserves it. He’s been a great player for Newcastle. He was great at Milan, great for Newcastle.”

“He is a leader. He delivers a lot of quality, but also quantity. So these are rare players in our game today. So he certainly deserves to play for a big team. The price tags in football today are crazy. So you are definitely going to pay a lot of money for a player like him.”

Rossi did not suggest that Tonali should leave Newcastle immediately, but his comments have inevitably fueled speculation that the midfielder has been linked with a number of Premier League heavyweights.

Reports suggest that Arsenal, Manchester United and Chelsea are all monitoring Tonali’s situation. It is believed that each club is assessing midfield reinforcements ahead of the upcoming transfer windows.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is keen to add depth and technical quality to his midfield as the club continues to aim for big trophies. Tonali’s ball-winning ability and passing range could fit well within the Gunners’ possession-oriented system.

Manchester Unitedhave meanwhile evaluated options to strengthen the center of the park as part of a wider rebuild of the squad. Chelsea are also expected to remain active in the market despite their already significant investment in midfield talent in recent seasons.

For now, Newcastle is under no pressure to sell. Tonali has a long-term contract and is seen internally as a central part of the club’s ambitious project under their Saudi-backed ownership.

Since his return to the regular season, Tonali has increasingly influenced the structure of Newcastle’s midfield. He contributed defensively and also helped launch attacks from deep positions.

It remains unclear whether the Magpies would consider offers for the Italian. But with rival clubs continuing to monitor his progress and high-profile figures such as Rossi praising his abilities, speculation over Tonali’s future is unlikely to subside anytime soon.
