Manchester United have taken early steps in their long-term midfield planning by exploring the terms required to sign Carlos Baleba from Brighton & Hove Albion, according to reports Air sports.

While no immediate breakthrough is expected in the January transfer window, the survey shows United’s growing urgency to reshape their midfield ahead of a crucial rebuilding phase under Ruben Amorim.

The Red Devils drew 1-1 with Leeds United on Sunday and it was another match that proved they need quick additions to their squad, especially in midfield.

Baleba has quickly developed into one of the most highly rated young midfielders in the Premier League.

He is an athletic midfielder who can contribute in both defensive and attacking positions, while helping the team build attacks and providing strength and security for the defense.

Brighton, known for its strong negotiating position, is believed to be reluctant to consider a sale before the summer and would only accept offers in excess of ÂŁ100 million, a valuation that effectively closes the door to any realistic move in January.

Baleba is the ideal profile that Man United are currently looking for: a dynamic, modern midfielder who can cover ground, break lines with carries and provide defensive security.

However, the Seagulls’ firm stance and the financial implications mean United are unlikely to push the deal further this month, and will instead keep him on their shortlist for future spells.

As a result, United continue to assess various alternative targets in Europe and the Premier League.

One such option is Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson, who has impressed with his energy, versatility and ability to contribute both offensively and defensively.

Another name being closely watched is Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton. Wharton’s calm nature and tactical intelligence have attracted the attention of several top clubs, with Palace expected to resist mid-season unless a substantial offer is made.

United are also keeping tabs on JoĂŁo Gomes at Wolverhampton Wanderers, whose tenacity and perseverance have made him a key figure at Molineux.

In France, Lille teenage sensation Ayyoub Bouaddi is seen as a potential long-term investment, while Olympiacos’ Christos Mouzakitis has also emerged as a data-driven option for the future.

Rather than overspending in January, the club appear to be focusing on gathering information, building relationships and positioning themselves for decisive action in the summer window, when more options are likely to become available.
