Wayne Rooney is “delighted” to see “United DNA” against City
Rooney, Man United’s all-time top scorer, was very pleased with what he saw at Old Trafford on Saturday.
Speaking in his role as expert for BBC SportsRooney said: “I’m obviously absolutely delighted. I think the team spirit, the work rate, the energy, everything about that team was fantastic today. I’m absolutely thrilled for the players, for the fans – the fans have been starved of that over the last few years. I know it’s just one achievement but I think everyone could see how exciting that team can be.”
“You hear everyone, especially us as ex-players, talking about United’s DNA and that has just shown what it is. Work rate off the ball, wingers coming back, coming in and helping the full-backs.”
“And the goals; crosses into the penalty area and the desire to get to the end. The first goal, the counter-attack, sitting in and breaking quickly – that’s the United DNA and that was what we missed. And hopefully this will continue.”
“The work rate, the form, the organization of Manchester United today, the desire to come back and double and help your teammates without the ball, going back as quickly as forward. I think that was very clear today.”
Pep Guardiola says United were “the better team” against City
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola admitted after Saturday’s match that his team had been soundly beaten.
Speak with Air sportsGuardiola said: “The better team won. They were better. When a team is better you have to accept that. They had the energy that we didn’t have, so congratulations.”
“They had the chances at the end and of course the goals we conceded were bad. We didn’t control the game, but overall we have to analyze the performance as a whole and they were better.”
Saturday’s win for United was the 81st over City in the 198th Manchester derby. United now leads City with 81 wins to 62 in the all-time Manchester derby.
