The police have found the body of a 55-year-old man who on Friday evening of the Channel Island Bridge near Darwin Sprong and was unable to swim back to the coast.
A spokesperson for Northern Territory Police Force said that the man – who chose the ABC not to mention after his death – “voluntarily” jumped off the bridge “accompanied by colleagues” some time after 9 p.m.
They said that the man was said to be “laughing and active in the water”, but began to drive away “despite the attempts of his friends to encourage him” to return to the dry land.
“He was last seen in the middle of the canal and drove to Darwin City in strong tidal flows,” said the police spokesperson.
“Witnesses observed him about two minutes before they lost sight of him.”

The police launched an extensive search and rescue operation on Friday evening with the help of a careflight -helicopter and the port authority, and was accompanied by NT volunteers of the emergency services and others when the search was resumed on Saturday morning.
A body that corresponds to the description of the man, however, was spotted and restored in the water around 11.30 am before being officially explained.
A report will be drawn up for the coroner.
