A man has been sentenced to life imprisonment for founding part of a Pakistan-based terror group in Assam to carry out terrorist activities, the National Investigation Agency said on Wednesday (Dec 31, 2025).

Md. Kamruj Zaman alias Kamaruddin was awarded three separate sentences under the provisions of an anti-terror law, with a maximum term of life imprisonment, by a special NIA court in Guwahati, Assam, it said, adding that the sentences will run concurrently.

The court also imposed a fine of ₹5,000 on Zaman in each of the three cases, with an additional three months’ imprisonment in case of default.

Zaman was convicted for bringing together a section of banned terror group Hizb-ul-Mujahideen (HM) in Assam to carry out terrorist activities during 2017-2018, the NIA said in a statement.

The conspiracy was aimed at creating terror in the minds of the people, the report said.

According to the agency’s investigation, Zaman recruited Sahnawaz Alom, Saidul Alam, Omar Faruk and a few others for this purpose.

The counter-terrorism agency had charged five people, including the four men, in March 2019.

While Sahnawaz, Saidul and Omar were convicted after pleading guilty, the fifth accused, Jaynal Uddin, died of an illness during the course of the trial, the NIA said.
