Prosecutors appealed against the original conviction of the man of five years.
After a successful appeal by prosecutors, a Californian man received a 27 -year -old punishment to make racist threats against a pregnant black woman.
Initially Tyson Mayfield made a plea in 2019 to receive a five -year prison sentence, such as reported by ABC News. However, prosecutors at the office of the public prosecutor of Orange County, however, found the 49-year-old deal too light in view of the seriousness and racist motive of his threats.
The prosecutors then tried to appeal against his sentence, which led to the new process of Mayfield with the new recording of a hate crime.
“In the past six years, in this case we have fought and fought and fought for justice,” said the public prosecutor Todd Spitzer in a statement. “Justice was finally served today against a man who hated others for decades, and now he will spend for decades behind bars where he belongs.”
In 2018, Mayfield had threatened the expected women in a bus stop in Fullerton, California. The woman, who was eight months pregnant at the time, resorted to the use of pepper spray on the man while walking away.
Mayfield has previously attacked innocent bystanders in racial driven incidents. Also with a swastika tattoo, the man had an earlier conviction for beating a man while he was shouting racist injury to him.
The judge on his first trial gave him a lighter punishment because of no weapons or injury causes against the women. Proponents and prosecutors, however, found the five -year prison sentence unfounded, given his criminal history, which called on a appeal. In 2020, a panel with three judges called the sentence an ‘abuse of discretion’, the road made for a new process.
“Based on his earlier offenses, the respondent has demonstrated that he is fully prepared and able to cause great physical damage to his victims, and there is nothing that suggests that he would not have done this in this case,” wrote the Panel, according to The corresponding press.
Now the man stays in prison for a much longer stint because of his actions.
