Stellantis has announced the export of the Peugeot 408 from Malaysia to Taiwan, which will be the third Asian market for the Gurun-assembled model, after Thailand in 2024 and Cambodia in 2025.
The 408 is powered by an updated 1.6-liter PureTech turbo engine with a Euro 6 rating. This configuration delivers an upgraded power of 225 hp (the 408 in our market has 218 hp), comparable to the plug-in hybrid variant, but retaining a lighter curb weight of 168 kg, says Stellantis.
Backed by an investment of Euro 1.5 million (RM7 million), the Stellantis Gurun factory has undergone a production line upgrade, including specialized R&D for powertrain calibration and local component development. Other markets in the Asia Pacific region are currently being evaluated for export.
“Our vision to transform Gurun into a major regional powerhouse is taking shape, supported by strategic investments to upgrade this vital facility for both local and export manufacturing. This latest development highlights our commitment to scale manufacturing in Malaysia while expanding the breadth of brands and models within the Stellantis portfolio to meet the diverse needs of the region,” said Isaac Yeo, MD of Stellantis ASEAN.
Stellantis says it aims to reach full production capacity in Gurun, with the aim of exporting 280,000 vehicles to 20 countries in the Asia-Pacific region by 2028. The plant is capable of making full electric vehicles, ICE models and mild hybrids. The Kedah plant will also host the CKD assembly of Leapmotor EVs, starting with the C10 SUV after a special investment of Euro5mil (RM23.4mil).
