A thrilling win at St James’ Park on Wednesday evening, but a very worrying incident involving Fabian Schar.

With the score at 2-2, an innocuous-looking challenge involving Dominic Calvert-Lewin left the Swiss defender in clear pain.

Fabian Schar frantically gestured for help as soon as he went down, as medical staff rushed across the field to help him.

After lengthy treatment on the pitch, the Newcastle United defender left on a stretcher.

Jacob Ramsey came on to replace him, while Lewis Miley moved to centre-back alongside Sven Botman, who had replaced Malick Thiaw at half-time.

Sky Sports now has an exclusive on Thursday evening, revealing good and bad news about Fabian Schar.

Keith Downie covers Newcastle United Air sports and he reports that their information is that Schar did NOT break his ankle.

The reporter says that tests have shown that there is no break.

The bad news, however, is that Downie reports that Fabian Schar is still out for one “longer period, during which the severity of the damage to the ligaments is still unknown.”
