Emmanuel Macron has returned to US President Donald Trump about claiming that his recognition of the state of Palestine is a reward for Hamas. The French leader expressed Trump’s criticism and failed him to end the war in Gaza when he hopes to reach his dream to win a Nobel Prize for Peace.
At Trump he insisted on “stopping this war” if he has to get the prestigious prize. During an interview with the French channel BFMTV, Macron denied that state recognition was a “reward”, where it was claimed that it was a measure that puts Israel under pressure in peace negotiations. He said: “I see an American president who is active, who wants peace … who wants the Nobel Prize for Peace. But the Nobel Peace Prize is only possible if you stop this war. We have to put pressure on the government of Israel so that they … stop this war and obtain the release of the 48 hostages.
“It is possible, nothing was set up in advance.”
Macron used his speech at the General Assembly of the United Nations (UNGA) to recognize the state of Palestine and told World leaders: “True to the historical dedication of my country in the middle, for peace between the Israelis and the Palestinians, this is why I explain that France recognizes the state of Palestine.”
The move is greatly opposed by Israel and the United States, with the Trump government against the growing recognition of a Palestinian state, an issue that blames the derailment of ceases -the fires with Hamas.
The meeting and the extensive recognition of the Palestinian state is expected to have little or an actual impact on the ground, where Israel still has a great offensive in the Gaza Strip and expand settlements in the occupied West Bank.
Hours later the US president had used his speech to claim that he “had ended seven unpaved wars”, trying to strengthen his hope for winning a Nobel Prize in Peace.
When asked about Macron’s comments about his pursuit of the price, Trump said his focus was on ending wars in Gaza and Ukraine.
Despite the disagreement, the two leaders were seen in a friendly exchange in the wings of the meeting.
Referring to disagreements about American rates on EU goods, Trump said: “I hear that France is going well, and you are doing well … apart from the incidental problem of wine.
“Emmanuel has actually helped with a few wars and arranges seven wars.”
