Luke Weaver doesn’t miss his ex.
The former Yankees closer and new Mets reliever turned heads after arriving in Port St. Lucie with a Bronx Bombers bag, but he explained that’s nothing more than offseason logistics.
‘Personally I thought it was a bit bland’ Weaver said on “The Show” podcast with The Post’s Jon Heyman and Joel Sherman. “I understand why people – I wouldn’t say there’s an uproar, but why they’re talking about it. I understand. To your point, it’s very common to bring your old bad to your new team. They don’t send first class airmail with a new bag, so I didn’t get a new bag from the Mets, like a duffel bag.
“Personally, I didn’t really have anything to put my stuff in other than grocery bags or something. Part of me is like, yeah, I don’t necessarily want to carry the Yankees bag because I’m not a Yankee, but I know that’s just a normal process.”
There probably wouldn’t have been an issue if Weaver had shown his face at, say, the Reds camp or the White Sox camp, carrying a Yankees bag, but the city rivalry will.
Some found it strange that Weaver didn’t throw away his Yankees gear, but he wouldn’t be the first player to report to his new team wearing gear from his last employer.
Last year, ex-Met Max Scherzer walked into Blue Jays camp with one bag from his former teamthe Rangers.
You can bet Weaver now has plenty of Mets gear that can replace any Yankees gear.
“I just need people to take a deep breath, know that I love the Mets right now. I’m a Met. I love where I am,” Weaver said. “I love the teammates so far, I hope to win as many trophies as possible here, and I hope to do that with the fans behind us and rooting for me and doing that too.
“So the bag meant nothing.”
Weaver, 32, left the Yankees after more than two seasons to sign a two-year, $22 million contract with the Mets.
After posting a 2.89 ERA in a breakout season in 2024 after struggling as a starter earlier in his career, he regressed in 2025 and had a terrible outing in the postseason.
He will start the 2026 season in the same spot as last year, where he will serve as part of the bridge to closer Devin Williams, who also left The Bronx for Flushing.
He confirmed that the Yankees didn’t show much interest in re-signing him before he chose the Mets.
“It was actually a perfect situation to come to the Mets,” Weaver said. “Obviously we see what the rest of the offseason has built for them and there are a lot of high expectations and strong vibrations at the start of camp.”
