A question that many fans of the Calgary Flames have is what the next Dustin Wolf contract looks like. The 24-year-old goalkeeper has been eligible for a contract extension since 1 July and will be an RFA next summer. Wolf officially settled as the number one more just like the Flames, so there will be questions about how much money he will get. If Wolf had not been, the Flames would not have been so close to a play -off place this season.
While other RFAs dominate the storylines, it would be nice for the flames to lock up their start network for the long term. Although there have been several predictions about what Wolf’s song will be, the point is that he has a big increase.
Recently, Another young goalkeeper in the same division signed a considerable contract. Anaheim Ducks goalkeeper Lukas Dostal was rewarded with a five-year deal worth $ 32.5 million. In this article I will briefly compare the two players and investigate whether Wolf is on schedule to receive a similar contract.
A short history of Wolf and Dostal
Both goalkeepers are still young and have recently established themselves as the starting goalkeeper of their team. Dostal, 25, was prepared by the Ducks in 2018 and Wolf was drawn up a year later. Dostal was set up from the Czech U20 competition while Wolf from the Everett Silvert tips of the WHL was scouted.
While Dostal was a third round, Wolf was not picked until the seventh round. Both goalkeepers are also on the smaller side, with both players 6’0, but Dostal are considerably heavier.
Dostal has more NHL experience, because he has played a total of 121 career NHL games so far. Wolf, on the other hand, still has to reach the 100-game milestone. Dostal really settled as a starter in the 2023-24 season, where he played 44 games. For Wolf this season was the year, appeared in 53 games and a Calder Trophy Runner-Up. Both players have a similar level important as their teams, because they are expected to be in the net as soon as their respective teams will enter the status of the competition.
Wolf and Dostal’s statistics
When it comes to comparing the statistics of these two players, Wolf’s figures stand out enormously this season. 2024-25 was the first year of Wolf as a starter and he made the best of it.
| Player | GP | So | Gaa | W | L | OTL | SVS | SV % |
| Dustin Wolf (2024-25) | 53 | 3 | 2.64 | 29 | 16 | 8 | 1409 | 0.910 |
| Lukas Got (2024-25) | 54 | 1 | 3.10 | 23 | 23 | 7 | 1467 | 0.903 |
Although Dostal’s figures are weaker, he played in a team that was statistically much worse. Dostal often had to stand up in a duck team that struggled in scoring and defending. He continues to determine his starting numbers because they should get better as soon as the ducks become a better team. He also gets a larger workload, because the ducks also exchanged John Gibson outside season this season.
As far as Wolf is concerned, he was the backbone for this year’s Flames team. Without him, the flames would have been a bottom-five team in the competition. They struggled to score and their defense was weak. This resulted in the fact that Wolf had the team out many times all season to win victories.
A look at Dostal’s contract
As mentioned, the ducks bet by rewarding him with a contract that pays him $ 6.5 million per season. The contract also includes an adjusted NTC in the last three years.
| 2025-26 | $ 6.5 million |
| 2026-27 | $ 6.5 million |
| 2027-28 | $ 6.5 Milllion (M-NC) |
| 2028-29 | $ 6.5 Milllion (M-NC |
| 2029-30 | $ 6.5 Milllion (M-NC) |
As you can see, it is a considerable amount. Given the potential of Dostal and his role in the team, the money is fairly well spent.
Given how both Wolf and Dostal are comparable in age, can this be a similar contract that the Flames offer to their net? Both goalkeepers have risen by the ranks to become the top dogs in the net, and Wolf mainly has the ability to be a top 5-10 goalkeeper in the NHL.
Is Dostal’s contract a good comparison for the extension of Wolf?
The flames are now not in a hurry to extend wolf, but you want it to be signed when the time is ripe. I think Wolf has shown enough that he can earn a nice deal from the Flames, because the team finally has that goalkeeper to build around.
So is Dostal de Deal a solid template to follow? If the flames succeeded in signing Wolf at the same cap -hit, many, including myself, would consider that a stem. I think he will get an AAV beyond the range of $ 7 million. As far as the term is concerned, five years would not be bad, but I feel for Wolf, you want to go for at least 6-7 years.
I would therefore say that Wolf gets more time and money than Dostal. If I did a gamble, I would predict that Wolf will get a six -year -old deal with an AAV of $ 7.25 million. Of course I would love it if Wolf had the full eight years, but we will see what happens.
Anyway, it would be a nice finish of the low season if the flames in it succeeded Wolf earlier instead of extending later. Maybe they wait until he shows that he can continue his dominant game before they reward him. Anyway, Wolf is a player who will be an important part of the future of the Flames.
