Lots of chatter but no movement

Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman joined Sirius XM NHL Network Radio with Scott Laughlin and Gord Stellick on Wednesday and was asked if there will be any movement soon. Friedman argues that while teams want to take action, there are still too many teams in the race to do anything.

Scott Laughlin: “We were just talking to Dan Rosen about the quarter pole of the NHL season, which of course we’re going to reach tomorrow night (Thursday night and at that point), and whether it’s that point, or whether it’s American Thanksgiving, or, as El Gordo says, Friedge always looks to November, circled on the calendar, as the time when GM starts taking stock of their lot in life.

Do you expect things to pick up here in the next few days, maybe even a few weeks, in terms of any movement? Because right now there are a number of teams that are unfortunately starting to backslide, and obviously we know it’s going to be an uphill battle the rest of the way.

NHL Rumors: Will Artemi Panarin Headline July 1, 2026?

Elliotte Friedman: “Yes, Scott. The thing is though, they’re still, I mean, who’s really out? I mean, Calgary is, yeah. That’s the team they lost again tonight. But other than that, there’s not a lot of teams that are really out. And as a result, I think it’s harder to get any movement when there’s so many teams that are still saying, ‘No, we’re still in the race.’

I think the Flames are kind of waiting for someone to make them an offer that makes them think. They’re just waiting for that. And if that happens, I have no doubt they will take action. But until that happens, they’ll wait it out.

And look, Toronto is a team that wanted to do things, but they ended up in last place in the conference after Buffalo beat Edmonton on Monday. They won again tonight, and they certainly won’t be waving the white flag. So I think the big deal is, look at a team like the Islanders. I think at the beginning of the year everyone saw them as someone who would be a team that could eventually sell, and people were kind of waiting to see what would happen.

Well, they just had a really successful road trip. It was kind of a crazy last-minute night, and so you’re not convinced that the Islanders are going to be a seller now. So Calgary, from this perspective, is pretty much waiting right now for someone to make him say yes.

NHL Rumors: The Nashville Predators and Steven Stamkos

But beyond that, Scott, even though I think there’s a will to do things, there’s just not a lot of people saying we’re out.”
