Professional Fighters League veteran Artem Lobov has withdrawn from his planned catch weight against Zubaira Tukhugov on PFL Champions Series: Road to Dubai on 3 October, after suffering from what he described as a serious eyebrow separation during training.
Artem Lobov’s Eyebrow Cut
The 38-year-old Russian-Irish Fighter ran the Injury during a struggling session in his training camp on September 29. Lobov described the incident in an Instagram video, which explained that a casual main collision opened a deep cut in the vicinity of his right eyebrow while struggling from the land position that immediately started bleeding.
“We just had a casual main conflict. As soon as that happened, I could see blood everywhere,” Lobov said in his explanation on social media. The injury was considered too serious for competition after medical evaluation, whereby the doctor present declared him unsuitable to fight when investigating the crack.
The nature of the injury
The cut turned out to be particularly problematic because of the extensive history of Lobov with face injury from his bare fighting career. The veteran hunter blamed his earlier participation in the bare Knuckle Fighting Championship for worsening the current injury.
“This was probably due to the fact that I have a lot of scars on my face of bare knuckle, and really, from all my fights. There are so much that my face very easy,” Lobov explained during a Russian media -appeared.
The triangular schism
Lobov described the injury as more than a simple cut, and revealed that it had a “triangular tear” that made medical clearance impossible. This type of crack usually includes damage to multiple tissue layers, including the muscles responsible for eyebrow movement and facial expression.
Such injuries usually influence the Frontalis muscle, which controls the eyebrow height, and the Oculi Orbicularis, which surrounds the eye. When these muscle fibers are separated, they require extensive internal adhesion and considerably longer healing times.
Background for the canceled PFL fight
The Lobov-Tukhugov-Matchup had been building for almost seven years, arising from the infamous McGregor-Nurmagomedov rivement. The competition was originally planned for UFC Fight Night 138 in October 2018, but was canceled after the involvement of Tukhugov in the fight after the fight on UFC 229.
The rivalry speaks back to April 2018, when Khabib Nurmagomedov confronted Lobov on UFC 223 Fight Week about comments made in a Russian interview. This confrontation led Conor McGregor to fly to New York and attack a bus with Nurmagomedov and other hunters, which led to multiple fighting canals.
PFL had positioned this as one of the most expected resorts on their Dubai card, with both hunters who wear personal hostility that spread for several years. The promotion has not announced or they will try to arrange the match again for a future event.
Impact on PFL Dubai card
The withdrawal removes a significant appeal from PFLs Return to DubaiThe two championship fights characterized by Usman Nurmagomedov who defends his lightweight title against Paul Hughes in a rematch. The map will continue with 11 remaining fights, including the Co-Main event between Corey Anderson and Devletdzhan Yagshimuradov for the light heavyweight championship.
This marks a setback in the turbulent career of Lobov, which is characterized by canceled battles and legal disputes, including his continuous lawsuit against former teammate Conor McGregor about profits from the whiskey brand. The veteran had returned to mixed martial arts after an interruption of four years, with his last MMA competition in 2018.
For Tukhugov, the cancellation means missing a new chance to arrange the long -term feud. The Dagestani hunter remains without an opponent for the 3 October event, where PFL officials still have to announce whether they will look for a replacement hunter or completely remove him from the card.
