Liverpool -midfielder Ryan Gravenberch says that his recent improvements are due to Arne Slot who gives him more freedom to attack this season.
Nederlands International played a key role on Saturday in the 2-1 victory of the Reds on Everton and opened the score before he set up Hugo Ekitike in the first half.
The 23-year-old was one of the best artists in the first half of last season when he was deployed in the number 6 role. It was the first time he had ever taken up the position and was surprisingly impressive, although his effectiveness later decreased in the campaign.
Gravenberch has operated surgery this period in more advanced areas of the field, which he believes it fits its strengths as a player.
“The coach gave me the confidence,” he told TNT Sports after the game.
“This season we have more freedom in midfield. Last season I was only in the six (position), such as Deep, and now I can make more ahead that you see today.
“I think my strength is there (in attack), so I am happy with that, and also with the goal.”
Everton pulled one back in the second half when Idrissa Gana Gueye fired the ball past Alisson Becker, but Liverpool held up for the victory with a determined second half of performance. It was the first time this season that in the last ten minutes of a match they did not need to win the victory.
“When they scored, they came up more and more,” Gravenberch added. “We had the chance to score another one, but if you don’t do it, they will keep coming and we will continue to defend. We have a good defensive line, so it was still 2-1 and I am really happy with the three points.
“We had the opportunity to score more, but 2-1, especially in this game, you have to defend. The next time we don’t admit.”
