Liverpool and Manchester United are in sub-par form this season despite spending a lot of money to rebuild their squads this summer, but both boards appear willing to sanction further additions next year.
Football Insider reported this that the Premier League rivals are keen to sign Real Madrid star Vinicius Junior, who is approaching the final season of his contract at the Bernabeu next summer and could therefore be available for as little as £80 million.
Vinicius is believed to be at a crossroads with Xabi Alonso and has as a result halted renewal talks with the 15-time European champions, while his financial demands are also seen as excessive by the club’s hierarchy.
Nevertheless, he is one of the team’s top players this season five goals and six assists in all competitionsbut if he fails to renew his contract, the Brazilian international could be put up for sale by Madrid in the hope of not losing him for free.
A Vinicius dive is unlikely for either club
Real Madrid will continue to look for Vinicius Junior’s contract extension until the end and no matter how things turn out with Xabi Alonso, the player has made it clear that he wants to spend the longer period in the Spanish capital.
Therefore, all things indicate that the parties involved, especially the player, will reach a fair compromise to extend his contract beyond 2027, ending Liverpool and Manchester United’s hopes of signing him.
That said, even if the striker were to leave his current employer in 2026, the Champions League would be a non-negotiable choice for him when choosing a new club. With current form in mind, neither Liverpool nor United could qualify for that next year.
All indications are that Vinicius will prioritize staying at Real Madrid for the time being, while Liverpool and Manchester United may not have a great chance of signing him, although it will be interesting to see how things develop in the summer of 2026.
