London City Lionesses started the Eder Maestre era with a dull 0-0 draw against struggling Liverpool in the Women’s Super League on Sunday.
Both sides impressed in defense at the St Helens Stadium, but it was in the final third where they faltered, with neither team able to register a shot on target in the match.
The clearest chance in the first half was for Liverpool after a mistake by London City goalkeeper Elene Lete, who recovered well as Ceri Holland closed in to dispossess her.
It looked all the more likely that Gareth Taylor’s side would turn the scoreboard around, with Alice Bergstrom’s chip attempt from the edge of the penalty area almost taking Lete off her line.
Bergstrom came close again but was denied by a heroic block from Elena Linari, before Holland fired over the bar after a swift Liverpool counter-attack.
Liverpool remain at the bottom of the table and are still without a win this season, while the Lionesses are seventh.

Data Debrief: Liverpool waiting for a win
This match will not be remembered fondly by either set of supporters, with the match producing a combined expected goals (xG) of just 0.58 (0.41 for Liverpool compared to 0.17 for London City) from the nine attempts in the match.
It means that another game has gone by without a win for the Reds. Only Reading in 2016 (13), Everton in 2014 (not winning all 14), Doncaster Rovers Belles in 2016 (15) and Yeovil Town in 2017-18 (not winning all 18) have waited longer for their first win in a WSL campaign.
Meanwhile, only Jamie Sherwood with Yeovil (26 games) and Kelly Chambers with Reading (13) have started managerial tenures at a club on a worse trajectory in WSL history than Liverpool boss Taylor.
