LinkedIn’s adding a new competitive element to the in-app gaming function, with Group leaker boards Set set to show how you stand on every game compared to your LinkedIn connections.
As you can see in this example, LinkedIn currently warns games players about the upcoming Leaderboard display, which will come next month, which will add another, more personal relevant perspective to the game experience.
The new leaderboard will show daily rankings based on every game that you and your connections (who have registered) have played so that you can compete with performance and discuss game strategies. Everyone who plays a game in the app will be shown this pop-up alert in the app in the coming week.
To be clear, LinkedIn has offered various versions of his gaming leaders since it first launched his in-app gaming options in May last year, shown Comparative performance between members of different companies, schools, etc.
This is more specifically aligned with your connections, which can be a more valuable and fascinating showcase.
If your connections play one of the games, that is.
In that area LinkedIn says that the in-app games have been relatively popular, with “millions” LinkedIn members who are now playing his games, and 84% of those who do come back to try again.
I mean, “millions” is clearly a lot, but with A billion total members and around 400 million active users, it can only be a small percentage of the total audience of the platform that actually plays these games.
But it is clear that LinkedIn is of the opinion that it is worth the investment, where the platform continues to add new games and new functions such as this to improve gaming engagement.
So there is something there, and if it helps LinkedIn to continue to post “record levels” of in-app engagement, it is probably worthwhile to continue to support the platform.
It still feels a bit out of place to my taste, but generating competition and involvement with colleagues and former colleagues can be another means to connect and expand his broader networking opportunities.
LinkedIn says it is launching its updated leaderboards next month.
