January 7 – Gary Lineker’s podcast production company Goalhanger is delving deeper into rights-backed football content with the launch of a new Premier League series entitled ‘Premier League Greats: The Moments That Made Them’.

After acquiring worldwide rights to use match footage from every Premier League season since its launch in 1992, this marks the first real use of those rights.

The weekly ‘vodcast’ will be built around individual player stories rather than highlights packages. Episodes will be released every Wednesday for the remainder of the season.

Each episode focuses on one Premier League figure, revisiting five matches that helped define their careers. It’s not about the amount of footage, but how it’s framed: Lineker is joined by Alan Shearer and Micah Richards to explain why each moment mattered, what it revealed about the player in that moment and how it shaped their position in the competition.

Much of the value comes from the personal context, with the hosts drawing on their own experiences playing with or against the characters.

The opening episode, released today (Wednesday), centers on Thierry Henry and marks the first time that viewers – watching across the various Rest Is Football platforms of Spotify Video, YouTube and social media – will be able to see the match footage as it is discussed.

Future episodes are planned to feature David Beckham, Steven Gerrard, Eden Hazard, Harry Kane and Cristiano Ronaldo, with Goalhanger focusing on players with both global recognition and domestic impact.

The new series sits alongside the regular The Rest Is Football edition, which remains one of the most listened to sports podcasts in the world, with a total of seven million downloads per month.

Goalhanger has gradually expanded its use of licensed footage, with the addition of Club World Cup goals last summer and LaLiga action this season.
