Lightning extends streak with 4-1 win over Rangers – The Hockey Writers Tampa Bay Lightning Latest news, analysis and more

The Tampa Bay Lightning entered Madison Square Garden and picked up their seventh straight victory, this time over the New York Rangers, 4-1. Brandon Hagel, Nikita Kucherov and Darren Raddysh all had another multi-point game en route to a victory.

Meanwhile, the Rangers fall to 2-8-1 as the misery in their own barn continues. This is the tenth time this season that they have been held to one or fewer goals.

Lightning continues its winning streak

Hagel would get his team on the board first, giving the Lightning a 1-0 lead midway through the first period. He would score another goal in the following period. Both of his goals were assisted by Kucherov and Raddysh, putting all three in a multi-point contest just past the half-way point.

In the final minutes of the second period, JT Miller cut the lead in half with a goal, sending this into the final period as a one-goal game. Nick Paul extended the Lightning’s lead to two with his second of the season. Paul now has a point in three straight games, and four total in six games since returning from long-term injured reserve (LTIR). Jake Guentzel grabbed an empty net goal to put in the final dagger and reach the final score of the match.

Jonas Johansson was in net for the Lightning, saving 11 of 12 shots on goal (.917). Igor Shesterkin was a bright spot for the Rangers, making 31 of 34 saves (.912). Neither team could capitalize on the power play, with each going 0-for-2 with the man advantage.

The Lightning remain in New York on Tuesday for a game against the Islanders. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. Meanwhile, the Rangers stay home and host the Dallas Stars on the same day, with puck drop also scheduled for 7 p.m.

Three stars of the game

  1. Brandon Hagel (two goals)
  2. Nikita Kucherov (three assists)
  3. Igor Shesterkin (31 saves, 0.912 SV%)
