LFC left-back was sent off after 16 minutes as loan spell was cut short

Liverpool left-back James Norris was shown a straight red card just 16 minutes into Shelbourne’s third match in the UEFA Conference League – their third without a win.

Norris joined Irish club Shelbourne on a season-long loan in February, meaning he would spend the remainder of the calendar year in Dublin.

While their League of Ireland campaign concluded at the start of the month – with a 0-0 draw against St Patrick’s Athletic to secure a third-place finish – Joey O’Brien’s side are still involved in Europe.

However, a 1-0 defeat to Kosovo side FC Drita on Thursday evening means their hopes of progressing beyond the league stages are slim.

That loss came when Norris was shown a red card 16 minutes into the match and has now been handed a three-match ban, but confirmed he has played his last game for the club.

Shelbourne has just three games remaining and only progression to the knockout stages will extend the 22-year-old’s stay until 2026.

This would still depend on an agreement with Liverpool to extend his loan, but any negotiations could be seen as moot given the likelihood of Shelbourne’s early departure from the Conference League.

Norris’ red card came after a heavy touch led to him planting his studs on Alamir Ajzeraj, with referee Oliver Reitala making the decision following a VAR review.

A decision we will make in January

Overall, Norris’s spell at Shelbourne must be regarded as a resounding success, having made 45 appearances for the club and played a total of 2,891 minutes on the pitch.

His move to Ireland came after spending the first half of the season at Liverpool, where he made four first-team bench appearances but failed to make it onto the pitch in any of those matches.

The Scouser’s only other previous experience with senior football came with 20 games on loan at Tranmere in 2023/24, while part of the youth academy representing the first team in cup ties with Aston Villa (2019) and Shrewsbury (2022).

Although technically the sixth-youngest player ever for Liverpool, Norris will turn 23 in April and therefore a decision will have to be made about his future.

That will almost certainly take him away from Merseyside – and the reputation he has built up over a season at Shelbourne should boost his chances of a move.

He is not the first Liverpool player to enjoy success on loan in Ireland, with Vitezslav Jaros winning the FAI Cup and being named St. Patrick’s Player of the Season in 2021.

Marcelo Pitaluga, the Brazilian goalkeeper, then joined St Patrick’s in 2024, but his spell was ended prematurely.
