Rep. Mike Levin on Wednesday issued a statement expressing concern about possible plans to close parts of Interstate 5 this weekend, amid reports that Navy ships will fire live ammunition across the highway during the coming period. Celebrating the 250th anniversary of the Marine Corps at Camp Pendleton.
According to the Los Angeles Times, the closure would affect a section between Orange and San Diego counties, cutting off a major thoroughfare that serves more than 80,000 daily travelers.
“The 250th anniversary of the United States Marine Corps is a moment to be proud of – to honor two and a half centuries of courage and excellence,” said Levin, who represents North Coast San Diego and South Orange County. “It deserves to be celebrated in a way that is worthy of their legacy and consistent with their values: honor, courage and dedication.
“That’s why I’m concerned about reports that portions of Interstate 5 could be closed in both directions for several hours on Friday and Saturday for events related to partisan or political matters,” he said.
Even on a normal weekend, traffic along the I-5 corridor is heavy. Long closures would cause significant traffic congestion and real hardship for residents, businesses and first responders. I hope that such closures can be kept to a minimum.”
The event, titled “Sea to Shore – A Review of Amphibious Strength,” will feature Vice President J.D. Vance and is expected to have 15,000 attendees. The Times reported that a military media advisory said the celebration will include a live amphibious assault demonstration, although it is unclear whether anything will be fired over I-5.
“This would be an absurd show of force, and completely inappropriate during a government shutdown when members of the military cannot even get paid,” Gov. Gavin Newsom’s press office wrote on X on Wednesday.
