JP Levan from Grand Rapids wins Gam Boys’ Championship in Playoff
Ypsilanti-JP Levan from Grand Rapids made a 15-foot Birdie putt on the third hole of a sudden-killing play-off with Harris Hoekwater, also from Grand Rapids, to win the Gam Boys’ Championship in Washtenaw Golf Club on Wednesday.
It was the second victory of the summer for Levan, who also won the Michigan Junior Amateur earlier this summer, and last week the cut missed in the American Junior Amateur Championship.
“I mean, two big wins in a year is clearly great,” said East Grand Rapids High School’s golfer. “I am just grateful for the (game) staff and Washtenaw and all volunteers and what they do to support these events and let them happen.”
Levan shot a 72 for his 3-under 69 from the first round for a total of 141, and Hoekwater, a golfer from South Christian High School who won the 15-and-under title at this tournament, collected with Birdies on Nos. 15 and 17 to shoot 69 and forcing the Play-Off.
Both players brought holes 1 and 2 in the play -off and put Levan’s Birdie Putt on the par 5 third hole to complete the title.
“I hit a ride, quite far there, but in the end there was a good hybrid and stepped up and down for the Birdie with a good putt,” he said. “I just wanted to stay in the present, keep the one shot in the play -off and just play. It worked. I finally did the job.”
William Pennans van Oxford, who shot 71 for 143, connected to Tommy Preston of Grand Rapids, who shot 72, in third place. Parker Westcott from Manchester closed the top five with a 74 for 144.
A champion was also determined in the 15-and-Under Division.
Rogers from Fort Gratiot shot a closing 2-under 70 to 145 and a three-shot victory. It was his first game title after he had been a number two twice in GAM tournaments.
Jack Logar from South Lyon shot 77 for 148 and second place, while Zane Rueger van Saline, who shot 69, and Timothy Wagemann van Haslett, who shot 77, in third place at 149. Paiton Old of Lexington shot 77 for 152 to complete the top five.
Rogers, 15 and a Port Huron Northern golfer, shot 75 in the first round of Tuesday and was four shots of the leadership at the start of the round.
“Yesterday was a struggle,” he said. “I have never really played so much. I was four-over by two (holes). I have never been to that situation, so it could give me back that I could play.”
He was delighted to collect what he called his greatest victory.
“Mentally, I know I had the game, but knowing that I finally got first, gets big,” he said. “This victory will give me a lot of confidence.”
