The Lepas L4 has been spotted in Malaysia ahead of the launch of the Chery brand in the first half of 2026. A post on the paultan.org Automotive/Car Discussion Group on Facebook shows the SUV taking part in a video shoot without any camouflage.
The current Lepas range is styled according to what the brand calls the ‘Leopard Aesthetic’, with key design elements featuring sleek daytime running lights intended to evoke the focused eyes of a leopard, while the sides feature three distinctive lines that reference the muscles of the big cat’s forearms, hind legs and underbelly. Its smooth and simple surface is said to be inspired by pottery.

While the design approach for the L8, L6 and L4 is similar, they each get their own distinctive face so you can tell them apart. In this case, the L4 can be identified by the grille with chrome pins ‘protruding’ from the Lepas emblem, while the edges have a patterned design near the headlights.
The larger L6 also gets the same grille, but the lower apron is “tamer” compared to the L4, which has more angular shapes and a lower intake with a mix of diagonal and vertical slats. The L4 also does not get black cladding for its wheel arches like the L6 and L8.
In terms of dimensions, the L4 measures 4,406mm long, 1,820mm wide and 1,635mm high, with its overall length exceeding that of cars like the Honda HR-V, Proton X50, Mitsubishi Xforce, Chery Omoda O5 and Tiggo Cross, as well as the Perodua Traz. The Toyota Corolla Cross is longer than the L4, but it has a superior wheelbase (2,700 mm versus 2,640 mm).
In terms of powertrains, the L4 in South Africa features a 1.5-litre turbocharged engine producing 147bhp and 225Nm of torque, paired with a six-speed dual-clutch gearbox. According to Car magazinethe L4, along with the L8, will be launched in South Africa around March this year.
