Leicester City have completed a deal to sign GAIS striker Ibrahim Diabate, but are facing rival interest from Wrexham, according to the Swedish outlet Sportbladet.
Leicester City will be looking to improve results at the start of 2026 to get the season going again. Marti Cifuentes’ side I’m in a disappointing 13th place, and every point lost only increases the pressure on the head coach.
Financial constraints also shape the Foxes’ plans for January. Any additions will likely depend on player sales, with the club reluctant to sanction the departure of key figures.
LCFC can still sign new contracts, but any deals will likely be in the form of initial loans, the Swedish outlet said Sportbladet they make such a deal. They report that Leicester City have completed a deal to sign GAIS striker Ibrahim Diabate.
The Foxes have signed a deal in principle with the Swedish team. Wrexham are also monitoring the situation and GAIS expects Diabate to be sold during this period.
Who is Leicester City and Wrexham target Ibrahim Diabate?
Diabaté started his career in his home country with ASEC Mimosas, one of Africa’s most renowned clubs. He was promoted to the first team in September 2017 after a loan spell at Ligue 2 team Ivoire Académie.
In 2019, he moved to Spain, where he joined RCD Mallorca’s reserve side and quickly caught the eye with an impressive goalscoring campaign that saw them narrowly miss out on promotion via the play-offs.
That form earned him a move to Sevilla Atlético, and he later made his senior debut for Sevilla in the Copa del Rey in January 2021, before spending the rest of the season with Atlético Madrid B in the third tier.
After finding limited opportunities in Spain’s lower divisions, Diabaté headed to Sweden in July 2023, signing with Vasteras SK in the Superettan. He helped the club gain promotion to the Allsvenskan, but a difficult top-flight campaign followed in 2024, with Vasteras immediately relegated despite his regular involvement.
A new start came before the 2025 season when he joined GAIS on a free transfer. Diabate quickly blossomed and enjoyed a breakthrough Allsvenskan campaign as a standout performer, finishing as joint top scorer and helping GAIS to an impressive third place.
Ibrahim Diabate’s statistics last season
A striker is a must for Leicester City this month
LCFC are just six points behind the play-off places with 19 games left in the season. Cifuentes’ squad also has a lot of quality and could easily soar in 2026.
However, that’s not likely unless they get a goalscorer. Replacing Jamie Vardy in the summer was a must, both on and off the pitch, and at LCFC failed to do this.
A player like Diabate looks like a natural goalscorer who could make an immediate impact for Leicester. However, with Wrexham looming, LCFC will need to get a deal done quickly.
