In golf instruction, absolute values are rare. But when it comes to big iron players, James Hong, a GOLF teacher to watch, explains that there is one common thread: Right before impact, they are “stacked” on their lead side.
If you study the best ball strikers on tour, you will notice that when the club kicks in, when the lead arm and club shaft are parallel to the ground, they are loaded into their lead leg in a unique way.
During this phase of the downswing, Hong explains that they stack their lead leg by loading the joints on top of each other. If you look closely, you can see the knee stack over – or sometimes slightly outside – the lead ankle.
This stacking move appropriately shifts the player’s weight to the lead side and creates a stable post to turn, allowing the player to follow the correct sequence, leading to better ball striking.
Think of ‘stacking’ for better order
Many amateurs tend to lean back in their swing. If you stay busy on the trail side, the club will bottom out too early. That’s when you hit those frustrating thick or thin shots.
By learning to stack over your lead leg, you’ll improve your weight shift and move your low point just in front of the ball, encouraging initial ball contact – which is the key to a better ball strike.

How to stack your swing
A good way to practice this movement is to do a few slow swings at half speed. As you transition into the downswing and the club reaches a level that is parallel to the ground, you will feel your lead knee move over your lead ankle. On that leading side, everything should feel stacked.
It may feel excessive or uncomfortable. However, with repetition, the movement will feel natural and easier to repeat.
Once you’re comfortable stacking on your lead leg, Hong says to incorporate a ball into your exercise. Start again with slow, controlled swings and then gradually build up to full speed.
If you want to improve your sequencing and contact, remember this: get yourself stacked to move forward, and the rest will take care of itself.
