Leafs’ Knies reflects on highlight reel and builds confidence during three-game winning streak

On Thursday evening, the team concluded a six-game road trip with a 5-1 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes. It was another big effort, with the team finally looking like they were finding their feet after a slow start to the season.

After the game, Matthew Knies shared what went right for the Leafs in their win over the Hurricanes.

“From top to bottom, I think everyone did a great job,” Knies said. “A lot of key blocks, good special teams. Yeah, I think everyone played well.”

It was a big night for Knies, who scored one of his best goals of the year so far. He fought his way in and buried it midway through the second to give the Leafs a 3-1 lead. After the match he told how he saw it go down.

“Yeah, I just had a break, he lost a twig there,” Knies said. “So I just tried to drop my shoulder, create some space and find the back of the net.”

The Maple Leafs completed a long stretch away from home on Thursday and now return to Toronto to take on the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday night. The old rivals last faced off two weeks ago at the start of Toronto’s road trip, with Montreal winning the game 5-2. Since then, the Leafs have gone 4-1-0 and will look to carry the swagger from the strong end to the road trip capped by Thursday night’s win into the weekend.

“We needed this,” he said. “We needed energy and we’re going to try to bring that home. I think we tend to be flat at home, but we’ll come Saturday and get some payback from these guys from Montreal.”

This Saturday marks the start of a five-game homestand for the Maple Leafs. While they have posted a decent 8-4-3 record at Scotiabank Arena this season, it’s clear from his comments that Knies is taking Toronto’s losses to heart. Coming home with a winning streak under their belt, the Maple Leafs now have a chance to turn the season around and rewrite the story of their year.
