Recently it came out that the new Utah Jazz Center Jusuf Nurkic is out of shape and can hardly run, as confirmed by his Bosnian coach yesterday. It is not the end of the world for jazz if Nurkic’s conditioning stays when the season starts, but it raises one question: why didn’t the jazz just apart from Collin Sexton?
No, this is not a chance of Sexton, an excellent basketball player who embraced life as a jazz man who wants everyone in Utah well. However, when the trade was announced, everyone was stunned by what Utah got in the deal. It was not only Nurkic, but they also had to give up a pick on the second round to get it done. They didn’t even save money from the deal.
Although that was all in itself astonishing, it also confirmed something else: boys like Sexton are just not appreciated by today’s NBA. That is why his former teammate, Jordan Clarkson, was abandoned. There was just no market for Clarkson, and although there was technical point of view for Sexton, it was a negative market according to all the accounts.
What was the point of taking someone like Nurkic? If that was the best return there, and the jazz had to confirm something with sexton to do the deal, why would you not refrain from sexton and keep that second rounder instead? Nobody loses sleep during a second round Pick, but the actions of the better player and a conceptactive feels all kinds of wrong.
It was completely looking forward to the world for jazz to get rid of Sexton, especially because they wanted to pick up the training wheels of their young guards. From their part it would not look good to refrain from sexton, but it would have been better than the situation they have now entered with Nurkic instead.
Will Nurkic go the season in Utah?
It is not like acquiring Nurkic is all bad, but it is not exactly great either. With him at the twilight of his career, he probably doesn’t take minutes away from their other big men who want minutes. His contract will also expire, which can explain why they preferred him to potentially better players on the table who had deals in the longer term.
Although all the indications are that Nurkic will be in the team of the team, he also seems to be an excellent candidate to refrain from the buy -out market. If Clarkson could not find a trade market, it is difficult to see how Nurkic, a worse player who is purchasing, could be the middle of the season.
Fortunately, there is no pressure on Utah, so it’s not as if it will have large implications for the team for Nurkic for Nurkic now or in the long term. Still, the way this went, how it is in one way or another poorly outdated, despite how little time has passed, and how it can all end, just feels very unpleasant, even if it ultimately means nothing.
