India started the match on the up front, forcing the hosts back into their own half as they tried to assert themselves against the opposition. A neat move from Sukhjeet Singh saw Selvam Karthi (7′) score a tap-in, giving India a 1-0 lead. From then on they largely controlled the pace of the match until a foul from Yashdeep Siwach resulted in a green card and a Penalty Corner for Malaysia. An unfortunate deflection for the Indian keeper allowed Faizal Saari (13′) to make it 1-1 to end the first quarter.
Determined to regain their lead, the Indian attackers looked sharp and attacked in waves while dictating terms with a well-coordinated system of high pressure. They managed to take the lead again through a calm finish by Sukhjeet Singh (21′) after an Abhishek shot came his way. India had a few more chances to increase their lead, but had to settle for a 2-1 lead at the break.
India earned a Penalty Corner early in the third quarter as they looked to double their lead. However, they were unable to make the most of their opportunities. Malaysia had a one-man lead after Jugraj Singh was given a green card in the 34th minute, and they made the most of it when Fitri Saari (36′) scored the equalizer. However, India responded immediately, with Amit Rohidas (39′) converting from a Penalty Corner, demonstrating his composure and experience. India had to dig deep to hold on to their lead after Selvam Karthi was booked in the 43rd minute, but the hosts equalized at the end of the third quarter through captain Marhan Jalil (45′).
With everything to play for in the final quarter, India looked for the winner while ensuring they held on at the back. Malaysia were denied a chance when Pawan made a sensational save to keep his team level. India then took the lead for the fourth time in this match, with captain Sanjay (53′) converting a penalty. Determined to see out the match, India remained determined to defend a few late penalty corners from Malaysia to prevail 4-3 in this match.
