Lateriser’s FPL Gameweek 8 Wildcard Concept

Three-time top 200 finisher Lateriser reveals his current Wildcard concept along with his thought process for Gameweek 8.

It’s been a while since I’ve been on a Wildcard during the international break, and so far I’m quite enjoying the slow drip process, treating myself to long looks at the Fixture sticker and extra doses of extended highlights that have been on YouTube for a while.

As things stand, I’m here with my Wildcard team, although there are a few choices and variations I’m still thinking about.

ARSENAL

Arsenal's defense: a permanent obstacle or a false dawn

A good place to start is: which three Arsenal picks do I want to go for?

After watching their game against West Ham United and seeing the type of positions Jurriën Hout (£5.9m) was recording, is he even a defender?

He has the second highest number of touches in the final third of any Arsenal player, which is also the third highest of any defender. He is also tied for the top for shots in the box Daniel Munoz (£5.6 million) and Riccardo Calafuri (£5.7m), and has the highest expected goal involvement (NPxGI) without penalty.

Timber and the Defensive Contribution (DefCon) win Gabriel Magalhaes (£6.3m) is where I start, and when I’m talking about an Arsenal team who have scored 50% of their goals this season from set-pieces, plus 40% of the shots they’ve taken from such situations, it’s a comfortable place to start.

Further forward, Bukayo van (€9.9m) has looked very sharp lately, and I feel like there’s a confident big dog around him this season.

“When I grabbed the ball I wanted to take the penalty, so those were my thoughts at the time. We’ll keep our conversations private for now, I won’t say much more.” – Bukayo van

The first line of that sentence is significant in my opinion, in the sense that he is the decision maker (he is also captain as Martin Odegaard (£7.9m) is not on the pitch), but even if we assume he only has a 50% penalty share, this makes him a very good choice.

GOALKEEPER/DEFENDERS

FPL Notes: Strand-Larsen Injury Update +1

I have Nick Pope (£5.1m) as my goalkeeper, simply because Newcastle United are a reliable defense and Pope is a regular gateway to that backline. They are second in expected goals conceded (xGC) so far and I like Pope’s points potential as he is good for clean sheets, saves and bonus points.

I have too Mark Senesi (£5.0m) in defence, which I don’t need to say much about as he still offers good value for money with DefCon potential, a set-piece threat and Bournemouth are third for xGC so far this season. I also like that they don’t have Europe, which will happen eventually.

Joachim Andersen (£4.5m) is also in my team. He competes with Chris Richards (£4.5m), but looking at the rotation, Andersen is more useful in the weeks I need him, and he also has better DefCon potential. While Richards arguably plays for a better defense, I wonder what impact Europe will have on their clean sheet potential, and if I’m at all in the market to buy a Crystal Palace defender down the road, there are probably three better ones to be had.

Joe Rodon (£4.1m) is simply great value for money and useful on a Gameweek 9 Bench Boost.
