The Los Angeles Lakers are actively monitoring the trade market for a defensive wing upgrade as they look to strengthen their rotation heading into the second half of the 2025-2026 season. The report was first detailed by Michael Scotto of HoopsHype on Thursday.

According to Scotto, New Orleans Pelicans forward Herb Jones is one of the names on the Lakers’ internal wish list. League sources told HoopsHype that Los Angeles is prioritizing perimeter defense and shooting as areas of need.

At 18-7, the Lakers have established themselves near the top of the Western Conference, driven by elite offensive production. Luka Doncićc leads the team with 34.7 points, 8.7 rebounds and 8.8 assists per game, while Austin Reaves is putting up 27.8 points and 6.7 assists in an expanded role.

LeBron James continues to provide stability and playmaking, averaging 17.6 points and 7.2 assists over nine games. Rui Hachimura has added consistent scoring on the wing, contributing 13.3 points per game.

Despite the strong record, Los Angeles has faced challenges defending elite perimeter scorers. The Lakers are allowing 116.7 points per game, highlighting the need for a fullback who can handle top assignments without sacrificing floor space.

Herb Jones fits that profile, offering positional versatility and defensive impact at the forward spot. His ability to guard multiple positions while maintaining offensive efficiency matches what the Lakers lack on the wing.

The current roster includes defensive guards like Marcus Smart and Jarred Vanderbilt. A true 3-and-D wing would allow the coaching staff to maintain energy for Doncic and James while tightening lineups late in games.

Los Angeles also has stability in the frontcourt, with Deandre Ayton averaging 15.3 points and 9.0 rebounds, providing rim protection and interior scoring. That foundation allows the front office to focus its trades on perimeter defense instead of the paint.
