Labor promises $ 100 million for Canberra Convention Center if re -elected

Federal Labor has given the green light to a new Canberra Convention Center, which promises $ 100 million in financing for first planning works, as well as a new water center, if re -elected next month.

Although the idea of ​​building a congress center and a new swimming pool in the City Center of Canberra is not new, it is the first time that enough money has been dedicated to get the projects going.

The 50-50 Financing Agreement with the ACT government, announced during the launch of ACT Labor’s election campaign, would see a re-elected Labor Federal Government chip in $ 31.1 million for feasibility and design work for a Canberra Convention and Entertainment Center precinct.

Another $ 68.9 million in federal financing would be spent on repeating the current Burgerbad in the Commonwealth Park with the construction of a new water center, which makes a country for the congress center.

Minister of Finance and Act Senator Katy Gallagher said that both projects were strongly needed, where Canberra described as a biter under national capitals not to have the capacity to organize major international events.

Congress Center to be built on the old pool site

Minister -President Andrew Barr said that the new Watercentrum would be located in the Commonwealth Park near the new light railing stops currently under construction on Commonwealth Avenue.

Financing Welcome, but more needed: Pocock

ACT -independent senator David Pocock welcomed the commitment, but said he would like to see more federal financing for the capital.

“Although $ 100 million in extra financing is welcome and shows what can happen when the community votes to bring more competition into our political system, we need a greater commitment and more extensive vision based on community consultation,” he said.

“I consistently urged a new congress center that has been laid together with a city stadium in the last three years because of the current of economic benefits and efficiency that this will yield.

“I would like to see both large parties commit themselves to finance partners for the entire project, not just what seems to be a precious feasibility study.”

The Real Estate Council of Australia described the financing as a “critical step to unlock the potential of the city as a real national capital”.

“We need infrastructure that pulls people back to the heart of Canberra – this project could do exactly that,” said ACT director Ashlee Berry.

“Now we call on other parties to follow this essential project and to work for this essential project for the future of Canberra.

“This is about more than just bricks and mortar – it’s about creating a city that can organize major national and international events, support the visitor economy and help bring back to Civic.”
