Alyssa Godfrey takes some time away from her daily job to deliver babies in the hope of delivering Birdies this week. Godfrey is one of the 132 competitors in the American mid-amateur Championship Field, which starts with the first stroke play round on the Dunes course of Monterey Peninsula Country Club in Pebble Beach, California, on Saturday. The American women in the middle of AM are open to players who are at least 25 years old on the opening day of the championship and have a USGA disability index that does not exceed more than 9.4. The field is determined by 29 qualifying sites around the country.
A competitive junior player in her home state New York, Godfrey went to Wake Forest University, but did not play a wave for the Division I program. After the lecture she started playing again in her home club of Meadow Brook on Long Island and qualified for the American women in the middle of AM during her first attempt earlier this year. Godfrey is one of the three players from her club who qualified for the women in the middle of AM.
“In recent years I enjoyed playing more local tournaments with women,” said Godfrey earlier this week. “I think it is really such a great community of adult women to play with. I wish I had the attitude and patience now at the age of 30, when I was in high school. I don’t have much formal golf experience, but I played my whole life.”
As an OB/Gyn Pa, Godfrey is one of the different players with remarkable professions in the field. Also competitive: NBC Sports/Golf Channel -broadcaster Emilia Doran, golf writer Gabby Herzig and LPGA Hopeful Brooke Seay, who recently graduated from Stanford with a master’s degree in epidemiology and clinical research.
How does Godfrey balance a demanding career when playing golf at a high level? She says she makes an attempt to play two to three times a week and credits her supporting team from colleague clinicians in the Mount Sinai Hospital in New York.
“In the summer I build my schedule on a few golf tournaments that I have team coverage for, which is really great,” she said. “Of course I work in the health of women and I work with many women. And it is just a good memory that you can have other interests that you pursue outside of your career, and it is really nice to have a team behind me at work that makes that kind of that happen to me.”
And how many of her colleagues know what a high -level player she is?
“I have three attendees who text me this morning,” she said. “They are all emotionally invested and cheer me, which is really fun.”
Godfrey and her colleague competitors will play 36 Holes this weekend, with the top 64 players who continue to match the game. You can find the entire middle schedule of the American ladies below. For more information about the championship and to follow live scoring, Click here.
