The 2025 season was one to forget for the Los Angeles Galaxy, as the MLS Cup champions went all out and posted one of the worst season records ever for a defending champion.
With a new campaign comes renewed hope in the form of the Concacaf Champions Cup and the 1st stage against Sporting San Miguelito from Panama, winners of the 2025 Concacaf Central American Cup. The Estadio Universitario in Penonomé would be treated to one-way traffic but ultimately a 1-1 draw.
Galaxy head coach and sporting director Greg Vanney is under immediate pressure to deliver results for one of Major League Soccer’s most storied franchises. With former German star Marco Reus not at 100%, Vanney was already in a key position.
A fast start saw the visitors completely dominate possession in the first half, but César Aguilar had clearly set up his club with a game plan in mind, and that plan would pay off.
When the Galaxy destroyed José Calderón’s goal, the 40-year-old was in inspired form, denying Gabriel Pec, Joseph Glesnesl and Matheus Nascimento three times.
An increasingly frustrated Vanney would fly into a rage in the 37e minute when a rare foray from the home side found space for Ángel Valencia. His cross was accurate and Rodrigo Tello beat JT Marcinkowski in the Galaxy goal with Sporting’s only shot of the first period.
Sporting led 1-0 at halftime.
The second half started with neither team making any changes, and the pattern of the match continued with Galaxy dominance but no goals. Joseph Paintsil, who is expected to be a big part of the offense after scoring double figures in goals last season, had a wild swing that went high and wide.
In the 60’se Minutes later Vanney had to make changes as the match was clearly evolving. Lucas Sanabria replaced Justin Haak. João Klauss replaced Matheus Nascimento and Reus, the Galaxy gamechanger, replaced Christian Ramirez.
Ball possession increased to 70% in favor of the visitors. The home side cowered but refused to break with a backline defending very organized and disciplined, with Omar Alba excelling in the challenge.
However, five minutes after the substitutions, Vanney’s decision paid off as Pantsil found the bottom right corner with Klauss providing the assist. It was nothing more than the visitors deserved.
Now it was time to find the winner; However, Sporting felt the momentum was completely going with the Galaxy and slowed the pace. Nagging fouls turned the pace of the match into a stop-start affair, with referee Nelson Salgado taking action more and more often. LA player Lucas Sanabria was the first to end up in the book after a nasty foul, quickly followed by Sporting player Marlon Ávila.
With just two minutes to play, Marcinkowski, who had been a spectator, showed the value of concentration with a save from Alba, who ventured onto the field for what seemed like the first time in the match.
Aguilar, sensing the nervousness in the Galaxy, became livelier on the sidelines and perhaps felt like a late winner, and Marlon Ávila almost set up what would have been a brutal winner against the Americans, but again, Marcinkowski earned his money.
With that, Salgado refereed the end of an enthralling but frustrating first leg for the Galaxy, who fired eighteen shots but with a depressingly poor accuracy of 16%, while Sporting managed a paltry five shots but with 60% on target. The possession statistic remained unchanged, with LA almost 70%.
So they head back to Carson and Dignity Health Stadium. The Galaxy have the away goal, but Vanney and his players will know that unless his team brings their shooting boots, there will be 90 minutes waiting for them.
