A potential January move to Napoli for Manchester United star Kobbie Mainoo is at serious risk of collapse following Ruben Amorim’s latest decision.
Mainoo is open to an exit from United
Since the arrival of Amorim as a replacement for Erik ten Hag in November last year, Mainoo’s role in the team has shrunk. This season, however, his playing time has been cut even further, with the Portuguese coach seemingly unable to find a place in his plans for the midfielder.
Mainoo is yet to start a Premier League match this season and has played just 183 minutes of action. His only start of the campaign came in the embarrassing EFL Cup loss to Grimsby Town in August.
He asked to leave United during the latter part of the summer transfer window, but the club rejected his request, insisting there was not enough time to secure a replacement.
Determined to secure his place in the England squad for the 2026 World Cup, Mainoo knows regular game time is essential – a key reason behind his desire for a January move.
There is no shortage of interest in the 20-year-old, who continues to be linked with Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Juventus and Chelsea, among others. A report by The Peoples Person stated that there are up to twelve candidates for Mainoo.
Napoli is seen as his favorite transfer destination. The recent resurgences of Scott McTominay and Rasmus Hojlund at Napoli serve as a compelling blueprint for what Mainoo could achieve with a move to Naples.
Antonio Conte’s side are actively looking to strengthen their midfield and see Mainoo as an ideal candidate to meet their demands.
However, according to Il Mattino, Amorim has vetoed Mainoo’s move to Napoli during the winter window.
Mainoo’s Napoli punch
The report [as highlighted by Get Football News Italy] confirms that Mainoo is a top priority for the reigning Serie A champions.
Napoli sporting director Giovanni Manna has been in regular contact with Mainoo’s representatives and there is a clear desire on the part of the player to join Gli Azzurri.
McTominay has apparently leveraged his personal bond with Mainoo and advocated Napoli as the ideal environment for the young midfielder’s development.
However, Amorim has vetoed any deal, significantly damaging Mainoo’s hopes of moving to the Partenopei.
