Manchester United should have taken all three points from their Premier League match against struggling West Ham United at Old Trafford on Thursday.
It was the home team who took the lead early in the second half through Diogo Dalot, but Ruben Amorim’s decisions in the aftermath of the opener ultimately cost the Red Devils two points.
A series of defensive changes saw the visitors slowly regain control and they eventually scored a late equalizer, reducing United’s chances of moving up to fifth.
There was little point in bringing in Manuel Ugarte, who was criticized by the head coach himself, when he had Kobbie Mainoo on the bench.
Amorim doesn’t seem to have any confidence in Mainoo
His strange reaction after the match when asked why the Englishman did not come on was picked up by all major media.
The Carrington graduate, not so long ago hailed as a beacon of hope, simply cannot earn a start under Amorim. He asked to leave in the summer, but was rejected by INEOS.
The 20-year-old is likely to demand the same during the January window. As revealed by The Daily MailAmorim’s lack of confidence weighs heavily on the England international’s mind.
Club coaches have noticed the change in United’s number 37’s attitude during training, with Kobbie Mainoo clearly hurt by the constant rejections.
United are lucky he doesn’t want him to leave permanently
“For fans, the exclusion of Mainoo makes no sense, for Amorim the obsession with one specific player is strange. Ultimately, he does not trust Mainoo and this underlined it once again.
“This absence is weighing heavily on Mainoo, you can see it everywhere on the training pitch and no insider at the club denies that his lack of playing time is damaging the youth product.
“Kobbie Mainoo has every right to wonder what is going on, amid his continued lack of playing time at the club.”
It will be interesting to see how INEOS reacts when the academy graduate inevitably asks to leave in a few weeks. The club will be happy that he only wants to leave on loan and not on a permanent basis.
