Morning sickness, exhaustion, weird craving for food, mood swings and a super sensitive sense of smell (no super power, believe me).
If you have ever been pregnant – or near a pregnant person – you will probably recognize them as fairly typical pregnancy symptoms. And although annoying, they are usually nothing to worry about.
But there are some pregnancy symptoms that can be a reason for concern and possibly even a sign of a pregnancy-related disorder called pre-eclampsie and It is important to know what they are, so you can warn your caregiver (HCP) as quickly as possible.
What is pre -eclampsia?
Pre-eclampsia is pregnancy-related high blood pressure. Sometimes it happens with proteins in your urine and can sometimes also affect your organs – usually the kidneys or liver.
It can happen to any woman or person who was assigned a woman at birth, and it usually occurs after 20 weeks or pregnancy and can also occur up to six weeks after the birth. And it is a serious disease that can lead to the death of mothers or babies if it is not treated. Pre -eclampsia is in fact the main cause of mother’s and teething problems and death around the world – good for more than 70,000 mother and 500,000 deaths in the babies worldwide every year. And pre -eclampsia finds black women more often – and with worse results – than white women.
Recognize the signs of pre -Eclampsia
Pre -eclampsia can gradually develop or suddenly rise – but being treated quickly is important to guarantee the best results for mother and baby. That is why it is so important to know what to look for.
Symptoms do not necessarily mean that you have pre -eclampsia, but if you are pregnant and have one of the following symptoms, contact your HCP immediately:
- Swelling of the hands and face
- Shortness of breath
- Win more than five pounds in a week
- Severe or persistent headache that does not leave with medication
- Change in vision, such as seeing stains, flashy lights or any loss of eyesight
- Nausea or vomiting, especially after your morning sickness has disappeared
- Pain in your abdomen at the top right, usually under the ribs
A comment about swelling: the majority of pregnant women have some swelling in the summer, but call your HCP if it increases considerably, especially if you have one of these other symptoms.
Some women have no symptoms of pre -eclampsia, and the only way to know is that your HCP controls your blood pressure and urine. So that is just one reason to keep all those prenatal agreements – which is actually a super power if you ask me.
